During the 16th and 17th centuries, it was believed that a hidden city of immense wealth existed and in 1595 Sir Walter Raleigh set sail following one of the many old maps to El Dorado, aiming to reach Lake Parime in the highlands of Guyana. Sir Walter Raleigh believed he had a genuine chance at finding the city of gold; especially after finding gold on the riverbanks and in villages on Guyana’s coasts. These discoveries of gold only strengthen his resolved. Today, Guyana is still pretty rich a golden cultural paradise waiting to be discovered and although the mythical city of El Dora-do was never found many still believe it exists along with that of the mythical phoenix.
