Ranathunga was born in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, growing up in the town of Nittambuwa, on the outskirts of the capital. Keenly interested in the fashion industry, Ranathunga has aspirations of creating her own clothing line before opening her own store. An artistic individual, Ranathunga enjoys knitting and pot painting as well as performing arts such as dance, specifically oriental. In 2006 she represented her school playing basketball on the national stage at the Asian Games, held in India. She also enjoys the active pursuits of swimming and cycling.
