Ghana Vice President greets Miss World delegation
John Mahama, the Vice President of Ghana, welcomed the Miss World delegation as they continue their Ghana visit
Mayor of Accra, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, and Chief Mandela, grandson of former South African leader Nelson Mandela were also present at the ceremony held at Osu Castle. The Miss World delegation outlined the Beauty with a Purpose programme and the importance of education in providing a better future and helping the children who are most vulnerable in society.
Part of the project initiated by Stephanie Karikari, Miss Ghana 2011, includes the construction of a nursery facility for a day care centre at Ayalolo, in the Greater Accra Region. The Mayor of Accra pledged his support and donated a piece of land on which the new day care facility would be built.
The delegation later visited a day care centre in the slum region of Sodom and Gomorrah, where close to 100 children are cared for. The Miss World delegation were deeply moved by the visit and were struck by how the centre's founder, an elderly woman, was able to give so much love and care to the children in an area of such extreme poverty.
