INTERVIEW
Tell us about your job/studies
I graduated from high school earlier this summer with honors, and I'm looking forward to beginning my college career after my reign as Miss Bahamas World is over. As for the job of being Miss Bahamas World, it requires lots of time and energy. When I'm not making appearances my day is filled with grooming and learning exercises. Im also busy working on my Beauty with a Purpose project which involves a school for special children in my home town of Grand Bahama. One thing I can say is being Miss Bahamas World is not always easy, but its a job that I love thoroughly.
How are you preparing for Miss World in South Africa?
Firstly, I am preparing myself mentally for the task before me by daily evaluating myself, my goals and what it is I want to achieve at the Miss World pageant. I am also daily preparing my body through training and exercises so that I can be physically fit. I also do a lot of research on the history of the pageant itself and all that is involved with todays Miss World. Ive been exploring the culture of Africa at large and ways I can become knowledgeable and feel comfortable upon arrival to South Africa. The final stages of my training will involve lessons in catwalk, etiquette and pageantry in general.
How do you feel about travelling to South Africa?
Im so looking forward to the opportunity! While many people only dream of visiting the Mother Land, I will actually get to live out this dream - and during my teenage years no less! I see it as a gift that not many of my peers can boast about. I feel privileged and blessed to know that Ive been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to not only interact with girls from many cultures around the world, but to do so in South Africa. Ive heard that while there I will feel right at home because the spirit of the Bahamas is African, and there are so many remnants of the African way of life that are still evident in the Bahamas today. And finally Im anxious to see the exotic creatures and natural beauty of South Africa.
Which elements of Miss World are you most looking forward to?
I am truly looking forward to interacting with the girls and exchanging cultures. I am one that believes in the beauty of diversity and to be surrounded by so many different languages and customs should be the most exciting thing! I get a kick out of trying to learn new words or phrases in another language so this should be fun. I am also eager to see what we will do collectively to help the people of South Africa. Most importantly I am looking forward to competing but at the same time having a great time.
Do you have a message to the other Miss World contestants?
I cant wait to meet you all and embrace everyone with the world renowned warmth of Bahamian hospitality. I am truly looking forward to having the greatest time with you all, and may the best beauty win!
What do you think are you qualities that youwill bring to the competition?
I think my greatest quality is my ability to love, accept, and respect different cultures. I think if we all learned to do this, the world would be a much better place. The only way to enhance our experience and truly grasp what the Miss World Organization aims to impart to each lady is by fostering this mutual respect. If we all work towards becoming sisters and examples for one another, this will make the pageant experience wonderful for all of us. I intend to look past solely competing and appreciate what the experience will offer.
What individual talents will seperate you from the other contestants?
I dont know if I'd call it a talent, but have a hunger, passion and appreciation for the pageant experience in its entirety. I believe my enthusiasm, personality, and honest desire to evolve as a more mature young woman is what will separate me from the other girls.
What would it mean to you to do well at Miss World?
It would mean so much, because I think it would take me one step closer to fulfilling my dream and lifelong goal to become an influential person of my era. I made a bold statement by winning the Miss Bahamas World title at the age of seventeen (I was the youngest in the pageant) and by doing so I was instrumental in giving hope to many young people like me. To do well at the international level would show that perseverance pays off, especially if you dare to dream big. It would be a source of pride for my family, and also a tremendous source of pride for my nation.
What is your favourite landmark?
My favorite landmark is found in my country in the capital city and is referred to as the Queens Staircase. It was built by slaves in the late 18th century and has 65 steps, making it a 102 ft staircase. It was named in honor of the 65 years of Queen Victorias reign in the Bahamas. It is my favorite because it is not only a symbol of an important era in our history, but it also makes for an excellent work out!
What is the one thing you cannot live without?
I definitely can not live without my family. When I was younger, my view of my family was eight nagging brothers and sisters and two very strict parents! Nowadays, my family has come to mean unconditional love and support. Without my family I would not be half the person I am today and to live without them would be life at its dullest.
Who do you most admire?
I most admire folks who dare to be different and stand out. I admire these types of people because they make bold statements as I like to do and show people that its okay to be original. They allow people to see that following the crowd is pointless, and the only thing that matters is to be true to yourself.
Who has inspired you most in your life?
The persons that have most inspired my life are my parents. My parents have persevered to give their children the best even if it meant that they are left out, hungry or hurt. Through their lives, they taught us that no matter how rocky the road gets, you can still make it. My parents also taught me the importance of faith and belief in God and how all things work together for good to those who love the Lord.I never give up on anything I set out to do because of their example of strength and endurance, and their resolve to never give up on me and my siblings.
