The Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood was the venue for the 70th annual Variety International Humanitarian Awards last night. The world's media waited outside the glitzy red carpet event hoping to get a picture of the VIP guests and award winners.

Simon Cowell received the most prestigious award 'the Humanitarian Award' and guests were shown a touching video showcasing his fundraising efforts over the years.

Sarah Duchess of York was awarded the Catharine Variety Sheridan Award. Founded in 1982, the award is named after the little girl who started Variety back in 1928 when, just a few weeks old, she was found abandoned by the showbiz club Variety in Los Angeles. The award recognised Sarah Duchess of York's work with Children in Crisis and annually goes to an individual who has shown outstanding commitment to disadvantaged and disabled children.

Since Variety the Children's Charity began in 1928, the Coca-Cola Company has been its longest, most loyal corporate partner. They were winners of the first ever corporate lifetime achievement award and Monty Hall joked "they probably deserve it".

The James Carreras Award went to Dr Louis Montes for his incredible paediatric efforts and expert care that has changed the lives of thousands of children.

International President of Variety Julia Morley presented the awards to the winners.

Simon Cowell said 'It is a real honour to be here tonight. I am truly touched to win such an award and I would like to thank Julia Morley".
