| 1st July Miss World representatives’ own tournament |
During the two day break from the FIFATM World Cup action, Miss World representatives from the eight remaining teams decided to hold their own World Cup penalty shoot out. The action took place on the evening of 30th June at a specially created indoor football pitch at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.
Paraguay lined up against Spain, Argentina faced Germany, Uruguay went head to head with Ghana and Netherlands played Brazil in a preview of the World Cup Quarter Final matches taking place on Friday 2nd July and Saturday 3rd July.
When asked whether she was nervous about taking part in the shoot out, Germany’s Maike Frohlingsdorf said “Of course not, I’m German!”
Brazil’s Luciana Reis added “I think it is better to win this World Cup of beauty”.
There was a controversial moment in the Semi Final when Spain came up against Argentina. Spain claimed that she save the penalty, but using the official Miss World cameras, the goal line technology showed the ball had crossed the line and Spain crashed out. Miss World has made history by becoming the first tournament to use goal line technology!
After some impressive finishing and athletic saves, the World Cup Final shoot out was between Ghana’s Mimi Areme and Argentina’s Erika Strelkov. Ghana’s Mimi went for placement rather than power but Argentina was not fooled and the penalty was saved. All Argentina had to do now was score to win the World Cup. It was a tense finale but Erika withstood the pressure and slotted the ball home to the great joy of the gathered spectators and watching media.
FIFA Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Nicolas Maingot, told the media how happy he was to attend the Miss World Penalty Shootout, which provided a lighter moment during the heavy World Cup schedule.
As Argentina’s Erika was presented with the World Cup trophy she commented “I think this will be a lucky omen for the Argentina team. The biggest danger to Argentina will be Brazil. If Ghana Vs Argentina is the real World Cup Final I will be very happy because it would be wonderful to see an African team there”.
