8th July Receives Freedom of the City and Gibraltar Medallion of Honour

Kaiane Aldorino has been granted the Freedom of the City and the Gibraltar Medallion of Honour in honour of her achievement in being crowned Miss World 2009. The motion was proposed in May and passed yesterday by a unanimous vote in the Gibraltar Parliament. Kaiane becomes the first woman to receive the Freedom of the City. A motion was also passed to allow Kaiane and all Medallion recipients to use the letters GMH after their name to represent the title.

Chief Minister Peter Caruana explained that the accolades bestowed upon Kaiane are given to those who have "contributed in significant and exceptional measure to the collective journey of Gibraltar". Mr Caruana added "I don't think any of us could have brought so much joy, celebration, satisfaction...as Kaiane achieved". Opposition Leader Fabian Picardo remarked "We are lucky to have a Kaiane in our community and in our country to serve as a positive role model and inspiration for young women the world over and in our community in particular."
